Uterus monitoring in practice
- the AFL test
Uterus monitoring system DMS 061 makes it possible to predict the progress and outcome of the delivery with outstanding relibility.
AFL stands for Lactate concentration in Amniotic Fluid. Samples of amniotic fluid are collected during active labour and analyzed for the concentration of lactate. The lactate level is automatically presented in the partogram. By combining the result with the development of cervix dilatation a thorough understanding of the delivery status is obtained.
AFL measurement
Less than a few millilitre of the spontaneously pouring amniotic fluid during active labour is necessary for an accurate measurement of the AFL level. The fluid can easily be collected with a standard syringe. The fluid is delivered into the single use measuring probe on the measuring unit and the measurement starts automatically.
If spontaneously pouring fluid is not available a smooth intra uterine catheter is available for collection of the sample.
Interpretation of the AFL level
It is recommended to perform the first AFL test after the Action Line in the Partogram has been passed. If a high AFL concentration is observed the probability is high that the progress of the delivery will be prolonged and ultimately end in a caesarean, ventouse or forceps delivery. In consultation with the mother, consideration should be given whether the delivery should be ended, to avoid the risk of complications from a long delivery and limit unnecessary suffering. |
